What is a Gut Suture?
A gut suture is an absorbable suture that comes from a cow’s serous membrane or the fibrous part of a sheep’s intestines. This natural material gradually breaks down with the help of the body’s enzymes. After about a week, a plain gut suture begins losing its tensile strength. It absorbs completely within 90 days.
What is a Gut Suture Used For?
Gut sutures are used for repair of rapidly healing tissues. For example, surgeons use this material for facial wounds resulting from Moh’s surgery. The rapid absorption of heat-treated gut sutures makes them a good option when the tissues heal in less than a week.
A gut suture is also the material of choice for internal incisions. Because they absorb into the tissue, they do not require invasive removal later.

Gut Suture Types
Two types of gut suture, in addition to the standard type, are available:
- Fast gut suture – The gut material undergoes heat treatment to make it absorb faster.
- Chromic gut suture – The addition of chromic acid salts extends the tensile life of gut stiches from about seven days to about 21 days.
Plain Gut Suture
A plain gut suture is made from the serosal layer of a cow’s intestines. Like chromic gut sutures, it is treated with a glycerol solution for a smoother profile.
Gut Suture Sizes
Gut suture sizes range from size 1 to size 7-0. They are available in lengths from 12 inches to 54 inches. Covidien and Ethicon are both gut suture suppliers.
