What Is an Infusion Needle?
Infusion needles are any needles that are used for infusion therapy or the connection of IV lines and catheters. These needles are primarily used to puncture the skin in order to provide access to various major veins throughout the body, allowing fluids like saline solution and medicines to be fed directly into these veins via IV lines.

How Does an Infusion Needle Work?
The way in which infusion needles are relatively simple, but can vary slightly depending on the situation and the specific type of infusion needle being used. Typically, an injection site will first need to be identified and cleaned with the aid of alcohol or other cleaning supplies. Next, the needle will be prepared and a tourniquet may be applied to the patient to restrict blood flow to the injection area before the needle is pushed into position, penetrating the skin and entering the body. Usually, a cannula will then pass over the needle in order to allow for IV tubing to be attached and IV fluids to enter the body.
Infusion Needle Sizes
Infusion needles are available in a wide range of different sizes. In terms of length, they can vary from as short as 0.25” needles up to 1” in length or longer. In terms of diameter, they are measured using the gauge system, with average gauges for infusion needles varying from 16 G to 24 G.
Infusion Needle Types
Most infusion needles or IV needles are very similar, but they can still have some slight variations in terms of their size and shape. These differences are usually not discernible to the naked eye, but by looking closely, we can observe subtle differences in the number and angle of the bevels on the tip of each infusion needle.
