Overview of 12 Fr Catheters
12 Fr Catheters are often called “female length catheters”. The female urethra is shorter than the male urethra and for that reason, 12 Fr catheters are a good option for women who deal with incontinence problems.
Adult women usually use catheters ranging from 10 to 12 Fr, with most women choosing 12. Note that every French catheter has a different color depending on their size. 12 Fr catheters are white.

Different Types of Female Length Catheters
Straight Tip Catheters:
These are considered standard, and they come in different lengths. Lubrication will be needed if you choose an uncoated catheter.
Hydrophilic Catheters:
This type of catheter comes with a lubricated surface, and it’s activated once you add sterile water. These are considered the easiest and most convenient to handle.
Closed System Catheters:
This type of catheter comes with a bag and urine goes inside the bag. It can be used without any contact with the catheter, decreasing the risks of infections.
Compact Catheters:
These are small catheters and extremely easy to carry, pre-lubricated offering more comfort and discretion for people who live a busy life.
How to Use a Female Catheter
- Ensure you have all the items you need before starting the self-catheterization process. You’ll need the catheter, sterile lubricating gel, wipes, and a container to collect urine.
- Before starting the process, sanitize your hands completely with soap and water. In some cases, it’s advisable to wear disposable gloves.
- Ensure the vaginal area is dry and clean. Use disposable wipes to clean the genital area.
- Remove the back paper from the catheter packet and make sure you’re not touching the catheter.
- If using a non-lubricated catheter, add the sterile lubricating gel on the top part of the catheter.
- Place a mirror on the floor to make the process easier. Carefully touch the vagina until locating the urethra.
- Use one hand to pull the labia and the other to insert the catheter in until urine comes out.
- Wait until all the urine goes in the container or toilet.
- Once you are finished urinating, remove the catheter.
- Dispose the catheter in the trash. Catheters are not meant to be flushed.
Importance of Choosing the Right Size Catheter
Correct catheter sizing is essential to the self-catheterization process for several reasons:
- If the FR catheter is too small, emptying the bladder will take a long time.
- If the FR is too large for the urethra, there will be discomfort and pain during catheter placement.
- A catheter French size that is too big may result in mucosal irritation and localized bruising.
- A catheter French size that is smaller than the urethra will cause leakage.
