What Is an Epidural Needle?
An epidural needle, which may be referred to by various names like Tuohy needle and Hustead needle, is a specific type of needle which is inserted into the epidural space around the spinal cord and used for the insertion of epidural catheters.
The kind of epidural needles used today were first invented in the 1940s by a Seattle dentist named Ralph L. Huber. Edward Boyce Tuohy, a US anesthesiologist, later popularized the usage of the needles and lent his name to them.
These needles are vital for helping with the insertion of epidural catheters, which are often used during childbirth to deliver anesthesia into the epidural space around the space and ease the pain and discomfort that people feel while delivering a child.
Epidural needles and epidural processes are also used during different types of surgery and during the recovery process after some operations.

How Does an Epidural Needle Work?
Epidural needles are used during epidural procedures. These procedures usually begin with the patient either seated and leaning forwards or lying on their side, providing access to the back. An IV line or drip is usually given to the patient to supply fluids during the epidural procedure, and a local anesthetic will be used to numb the insertion site. The epidural needle can then be used to puncture the skin and guide the epidural catheter into the patient's back. Once the catheter is in place, the needle is retracted, leaving the catheter in position to supply pain relieving medication.
Epidural Needle Sizes
Epidural needles need to be relatively long, as they have to penetrate quite far into the body to reach the epidural space and guide the catheter into position. These needles can vary in length, ranging from 3 to 5", on average.
Epidural Needle Types
There are various types of epidural needle which have slightly different designs and benefits. The Tuohy needle is regarded as the standard epidural needle, but other varieties exist like the Crawford needle, Hustead needle, Weiss needle, and Wagner needle. These needles tend to have different levels of sharpness and slightly different shaped tips.
Epidural Needle Uses
As explained above, epidural needles are used exclusively for epidural procedures, which is when a catheter is inserted into the epidural space around the spine to deliver pain relieving medication into the body. This is most commonly done when a woman is giving birth to ease pain and discomfort, but may also be used during some types of surgery or in other situations.
