What Is an Arterial Catheter?
An arterial catheter is a type of catheter that is designed to be inserted into the arteries (blood vessels which carry blood from the heart around the body). Like other kinds of catheter, an arterial catheter is a thin, hollow tube made from flexible material.
Arterial catheters have a variety of uses. One of their most common uses is to measure blood pressure more accurately than with typical blood pressure cuffs and devices. They may also be used to take blood samples for measuring blood content.
Another name for an arterial catheter is an arterial line, and these tubes are commonly used in operating rooms and intensive care units (ICUs). They are available in various sizes and thicknesses in order to be used in patients of different ages. They're a very useful piece of medical equipment, relied upon by doctors and nurses around the world on a daily basis.

How Does an Arterial Catheter Work?
A needle is used in the process of inserting an arterial catheter. First, the area where the catheter is set to be inserted is cleaned. The most common areas include the wrist and the groin. Next, the needle, attached to the catheter, is inserted into the artery. An ultrasound machine may be used to guide it into position. Once the line is in, it can be taped or stitched into place. If the catheter is in the wrist of the patient, the wrist may be taped to a board to prevent it from bending.
Arterial Catheter Sizes
Arterial catheters can be found in a range of sizes. They are usually measured using the French gauge system, which tells us the external diameter of the catheter tube. Arterial catheters can come in sizes like 3 Fr, 5 Fr, and 7 Fr. Larger arterial catheters may be needed in certain patients, based on factors like age and arterial diameter.
Arterial Catheter Types
There is only one main type of arterial catheter. Different brands and companies produce them, but they all follow the same basic blueprint, resulting in products that are very similar, differing only in terms of size.
Arterial Catheter Uses
There are two main uses of arterial catheters or lines. The first use to measure blood pressure accurately. The arterial line can be inserted into a patient to provide a constant and up-to-date measurement of their blood pressure, delivering the reading to a connected monitor. This can be helpful during surgery or other procedures. The second use is to collect blood samples for measuring certain gasses, like oxygen and carbon dioxide, in the bloodstream.
