What Is a Red Rubber Catheter?
A red rubber catheter, as the name implies, is one that is made from a red rubber material. These catheters are also sometimes known as Robinson catheters and they are a type of urinary catheter, inserted into the urethra and used to drain urine from the bladder and out of the body.
Various materials can be used to make urinary catheters, and red rubber is one of the most favored choices. It has a range of advantages. One of the key benefits of red rubber catheters is that they're very soft. This makes them quite easy and relatively comfortable to insert into a patient's body.
Red rubber is also thermo-sensitive, which means that it adjusts well to the surrounding temperature, and this also makes insertion more comfortable.
However, there are certain downsides to red rubber catheters. For instance, since they are made from latex, they can cause allergic reactions in some patients and shouldn't be used in anyone with a latex allergy.

How Does a Red Rubber Catheter Work?
Like other kinds of urinary catheters, a red rubber catheter needs to be inserted into the urethra of the patient. It has a straight, narrow tip at one end to aid with insertion and can then be pushed further into the body until the tip reaches the bladder. At this point, urine should begin to flow through the tubing and out at the other end into a receptacle or bag.
Red Rubber Catheter Sizes
Urinary catheters like red rubber catheters are measured using the French gauge system, which has a range of numerical ratings to tell us the outer diameter of the catheter tube. Average diameters for red rubber catheters range from around 10 Fr to 20 Fr, but smaller and larger variants are available to suit patients with different needs.
Red Rubber Catheter Types
Red rubber catheters are very simple and all look very similar, so there are not multiple types or categories to be aware of. However, they can be divided into types such as male, female, and pediatric. These different varieties all look the same but have different sizes to suit male, female, and child patients, respectively.
Red Rubber Catheter Uses
Like other types of urinary catheters, red rubber catheters are designed to help patients pass urine when it would otherwise be difficult, painful, or impossible to do so. These catheters can be used by patients who are suffering from urinary retention, incontinence, blockages in the urethra, mobility issues, and other conditions.
