What Is an Epidural Catheter?
An epidural catheter, which may also be known as a spinal catheter, is one that is designed to be used in epidural procedures. It is inserted into the back of the patient, into the epidural space that surrounds the spinal cord, where it can be used to administer anesthetic or other fluids.
Like other catheters, epidural catheters consist of very thin, plastic, hollow tubes. At one end, the tube can be connected to a bag or receptacle which feeds medicine through the tube and into the epidural space inside the body. These catheters need to be very fine in order to enter the epidural space without causing any damage.
Epidural catheters are vital for epidural procedures that can assist with a wide range of ailments and health issues. They are well-known for being used during childbirth, for example, but can also be useful for patients who are suffering from chronic pain or surgical pain.

How Does an Epidural Catheter Work?
Insertion of epidural catheters is a relatively simple procedure that is carried out in hospitals and clinics around the world on a daily basis, but it still needs to be performed with care and attention. The area where the catheter is set to be inserted will first be cleaned and sterilized, and the patient may be placed on an intravenous (IV) line beforehand. The patient will also need to either sit on the bed or lie on their side, allowing the medical team to access their back. A local anesthetic is injected into the back first to numb the area and a needle is used to find the epidural space. The catheter is then threaded through the needle and into the epidural space, where it can deliver anesthetic and other medicine.
Epidural Catheter Sizes
Like other kinds of catheters, epidural catheters are available in a range of different sizes. The tubes themselves may have different lengths and the catheters may also have slightly different diameters. Different sizes can be used in patients of different ages and body types.
Epidural Catheter Types
Epidural catheters can be made by different brands and have slightly different lengths and sizes, but they all follow the same basic design. So there is only one main type of epidural catheter.
Epidural Catheter Uses
As the name implies, an epidural catheter's main use is during epidural procedures. An epidural is when anesthetic or other medicines are injected into the epidural space around the spinal cord. This is most commonly used during childbirth to ease labor pains in expectant mothers. The epidural catheter is what delivers the anesthetic or other medicine into the epidural space.
Epidural Catheter Suppliers
B Braun, Teleflex, Smiths Medical, Arrow International, and Halyard Health are some of the top supplies of epidural catheters.
