What Is a Non Hydrophilic Catheter?
A non hydrophilic catheter, also known as a non coated catheter, is a commonly-used type of intermittent urinary catheter. The defining characteristic of these kinds of catheters is that they are not pre-lubricated in any way.
This makes them different from hydrophilic catheters, which come with a special coating around the outside that activates when put in contact with water and gives the catheter a slippery, lubricated surface, making insertion easier.
Since non hydrophilic catheters do not have this coating, they need to be lubricated separately, adding an extra step to the insertion process.
Like other kinds of catheters, non hydrophilic catheters are available in various sizes and can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions or help patients with various needs, making it easier for them to pass urine without needing to use a toilet.
How Does a Non-Hydrophilic Catheter Work?
Given that non hydrophilic catheters do not have any kind of coating or lubricant on them, they need to be lubricated separately before being inserted into the body. Usually, a packet of lubricating jelly will need to be carefully applied to the tip of the catheter. It can then be pushed into the urethra and inserted into the body until it reaches the bladder, allowing urine to drain out into a connected collection bag.
Non-Hydrophilic Catheter Sizes
Non Hydrophilic catheters are available in a wide range of sizes to suit the needs of different patients. There are pediatric sizes for younger patients and wider diameters for adult patients. The diameter of these catheters is measured using the French gauge system, with average sizes ranging from around 8 Fr up to 16 Fr, although bigger and smaller sizes may be used.
Non-Hydrophilic Catheter Types
Non hydrophilic catheters are a sub-type of intermittent catheters and can be divided into two more main types: straight tip and coudé. Straight tip non hydrophilic catheters have straight-shaped ends that run parallel to the rest of the tube, while coudé catheters have bent or curved ends that curve away from the rest of the tube and can help with insertion in certain patients.
Non-Hydrophilic Catheter Uses
Non hydrophilic catheters are used as intermittent urinary catheters. This means that they are designed for short-term, intermittent use in patients and can be removed and re-inserted as needed. They are often used in patients who are suffering from difficulties with urination, such as incontinence or urinary retention, but can also be used for patients who may find it hard to access or use a toilet, due to mobility issues or other problems.
