What Is an IV Filter?

IV filters, also sometimes known as in-line filters or infusion filters, are small but essential accessories used during infusion therapy and intravenous access in many different hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare institutions around the world.

As the name implies, an IV filter's purpose is to filter the fluids flowing through IV lines, getting rid of any particulates in the fluid that could cause contamination or blockages. These filters also have a secondary purpose of helping to stop air bubbles forming in the IV line.

Typically, these filters contain air vents at either end with a fluid filter membrane in the center. The fluid flows over the membrane, and once the membrane is wet, it prevents any air passing through to the patient side of the IV line. Simultaneously, the IV filter also works to trap particles in the fluid. These simple items help to make IV lines much safer and cleaner for all.

How Does an IV Filter Work?

IV filters have caps at either end that allow them to connect to IV lines, as well as a central filter membrane section, which is what actually carries out the filtration process. Once the filter is in place, fluid passes through it and the membrane helps to trap particulates and prevent any air bubbles forming on the patient side. There are usually small air vents on the filter, and air escapes via these vents, rather than forming bubbles or passing through the line.

IV Filter Sizes

Since IV lines and catheters are available in a wide range of different sizes, it's also possible to find IV filters in different sizes, too. Some of them may vary in terms of their flow rate, for example, or the amount of fluid they contain. Some filters are very small, while others are quite chunky and large, but they all carry out similar functions.

IV Filter Types

Most IV filters are very similar, but they can have slightly different components. Some of them may contain air vents, for example, while others will not. Some also contain more advanced filtration media to block and trap different types of particulates that may form in the IV line. It’s also possible to find some types of IV filters with added safety features like Luer locks to hold them in place.

IV Filter Uses

The main purpose of an IV filter is to trap particulates in the IV line and to prevent air bubbles from forming within the line. This is important for patients who are connected to IV lines, as bubbles and particulates can be harmful if they cause blockages within the body.
