What Is a Dialysis Catheter?
A dialysis catheter is a special kind of catheter that is used with a dialysis machine. It connects the machine to the patient and allows for blood to pass between one and the other freely and safely. They are vital for use in patients who have problems with their kidneys or conditions like diabetes.
A dialysis catheter contains two lumens: a venous lumen and an arterial lumen. Both of these lumens are inserted into the body. The arterial lumen transports blood away from the patient and into the dialysis machine, while the venous lumen is the one through which blood passes back from the machine and into the patient's body.
Dialysis catheters can have different sizes, flow rates, and may come in different types, but all carry out the same basic function. They are also specially designed to minimize the risk of infection or contamination.

How Does a Dialysis Catheter Work?
The way in which a dialysis catheter works is as follows: the two lumens - venous and arterial - are inserted into one of the main veins of the body. Usually, they are placed in the internal right jugular vein, which leads to the superior vena cava and the right atrium of the heart. They enter via a puncture in the skin. The arterial lumen then takes blood away from the body to the dialysis machine, while the venous lumen is connected to the other end of the machine and transports blood back to the body after undergoing dialysis.
Dialysis Catheter Sizes
Like other kinds of catheters, dialysis catheters can be found in a wide range of sizes to suit patients of different ages. They are usually measured with the French scale system, with sizes ranging from as low as 5 Fr up to 14 Fr and above.
Dialysis Catheter Types
There are two main types of dialysis catheters: temporary access catheters and permanent access catheters. Temporary access dialysis catheters are designed to only be used for a temporary period, usually up to three weeks in total. They are typically smaller than permanent access catheters. They may have a third lumen which is used for delivering fluids to the patient. Permanent or long-term access dialysis catheters are bigger and have two lumens only. They're designed to be used for much longer periods of time than temporary catheters.
Dialysis & Hemodialysis Catheter Uses
The main function of dialysis catheters is to aid in the process of dialysis, where dialysis machines help to carry out functions to purify and clean blood that a patient's kidneys may be incapable of carrying out. They are commonly used for people who are diabetic or dealing with various kidney conditions, like kidney failure.
