What Is a Pressure Infusion Bag?
A pressure IV bag, also known as a pressure infusion bag, is a specific kind of intravenous bag used for infusion therapy. It consists of a bag with a bladder, a pressure gauge, an inflation bulb connected to the bag via a tube, and an envelope to hold the bag and bladder in position.
The unique characteristic of pressure IV bags is that the bag itself is placed within the aforementioned envelope. The inflation bulb can then be used to inflate the bag to a desired pressure. This puts the fluid inside the bag at a certain pressure level to provide for safe, rapid, and controlled infusion of fluids like blood or IV solutions into the patient's body.
There are many cases in which pressure IV bags may be used, and they’re a commonly-utilized piece of medical equipment found in clinics and hospitals all over the world. They’re very useful for delivering blood and fluids to patients who are undergoing surgery or being treated for illnesses and chronic conditions.

How Does a Pressure IV Bag Work?
The way in which pressure IV bags work is a little different to other kinds of IV bags, like gravity IV bags. First, the bag itself is placed within the pressure envelope. The bag can then be suspended on a hook or pole. The inflation bulb will then be used to pump up the bag, and the attached pressure gauge can be used to determine the pressure level and set it at the correct value. Once the pressure level has been reached, the stopcock on the tube can be turned to lock the pressure in place. The bag will then be ready to attach to a catheter for infusion therapy into a patient's body.
IV Pressure Bag Sizes
Pressure IV bags and pressure infusors are available in a wide range of sizes to suit different patients and situations. Some of the most common sizes range from 500ml to 1,000ml, 2,000ml and 3,000ml, although other options are available.
IV Pressure Bag Types
We can divide pressure IV bags into two main types: disposable and reusable. As the names imply, disposable pressure IV bags are designed to be disposed of after a single use, while reusable infusion bags can be used again for future treatments.
IV Pressure Bag Uses
There are various potential uses of pressure IV bags. They’re great for delivering fluids and medications into the body at a rapid and controlled rate, so may be very useful in situations when patients require a steady supply of fluids. This is useful for patients who are dehydrated or suffering from various illnesses and diseases.
