What Is a Steel Suture?
Medical sutures are the materials used to seal up wounds and stitch up tissue after surgery, and they come in various forms, with many different materials used to make them. Some of those materials are tougher and stronger than others, and if you’re looking for the strongest possible sutures, steel sutures are the right option.
As the name implies, steel sutures are made from stainless steel, specially manufactured to adhere to the standards of leading healthcare bodies like United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and European Pharmacopeia (EP). They are non-absorbable, which means they won't degrade on their own in the body, and they're immensely strong.
Other advantages of surgical steel sutures include their low levels of tissue reactivity, which can help wounds to heal faster and reduce the risk of adverse reactions to the sutures themselves, as well as their rigidity. On the downside, steel sutures have poor handling, so can only be used in certain situations.

When to Use a Steel Suture?
It's always important to use the correct type of surgical suture for each situation. The high strength and dependability of steel sutures, coupled with their low tissue reactivity levels, makes them a great choice for a wide range of procedures. They're strong enough for heavy-duty applications like orthopedics and sternum closure, for example, while also being useful for other processes like hernia repairs, intestinal anastomosis, and large wound closure. They're the ideal choice of suture to use whenever strength and solidity are among the top priorities.
Steel Suture Sizes
Just like other types of medical sutures, it’s possible to find steel sutures in various sizes, ranging from the relatively narrow size of 0 all the way up to thicker sizes like 4 and 5 on the USP (United States Pharmacopeia) system.
Steel Suture Types
In terms of types, there aren't lots of different types of steel sutures, as all steel sutures are made from the same material - stainless surgical steel - and produced according to the same standards and designs. Different brands may produce them and they may be used in different ways, but all steel sutures are more or less identical.
Steel Suture Uses
Surgical steel sutures are well-known as being some of the thickest and strongest options in the world of sutures, giving them a specific range of advantages and applications. Since they have such impressive strength and low levels of tissue reactivity, they're ideal in the field of orthopedics, as well as sternal closure and skin closure. They're also often used for abdominal wound closures and hernia operations.
Steel Suture Suppliers
Some of the top suppliers of steel sutures include Ethicon, Covidien, and Teleflex.
