What Is an IV Bag Holder?
An IV bag holder, also known as an IV bag pole or IV bag stand, are vital pieces of medical equipment used in hospitals and clinics all over the world. As the name implies, they're stands or poles that are designed to hold IV bags in position, usually beside a patient's bed.
IV bag holders usually consist of a long stand, supported by several legs at the bottom. The legs may have casters to allow the stand to be rolled around into different positions or transported from place to place. At the top of the stand, we can find one or more hooks to hang the IV bags on.
IV bag holders are used to support all kinds of IV bags, from the smallest IV bags to the biggest 4L bags filled with a range of solutions, like saline solution or Ringer’s lactate. They’re essential pieces of medical equipment that are needed on a daily basis in many different hospitals and medical institutions.

How Does an IV Bag Holder Work?
The way in which IV bag holders work is relatively simple. First, the holder or stand will need to be set up and placed in position, usually next to the head of a patient’s bed, so that they’re out of the way of medical professionals but still close enough to provide easy IV access to the patient’s body. Then, the IV bag will need to be hooked onto the top of the pole and connected to a catheter, which can then be inserted into the patient’s body. The stand will remain in position for as long as infusion therapy is needed and may be moved around to different parts of the room or other areas around the hospital, as required.
IV Bag Holder Sizes
IV bag holders and poles are available in a wide range of sizes. They need to be quite tall in order to suspend the IV bag a sufficient height about the patient's body, as many IV bags rely on gravity to control the flow of fluids through the catheter tube. Average heights for IV poles range from 45" to 85" and common diameters range from 16" to 22”.
IV Bag Holder Types
We can divide IV bag holders into a variety of types. They can be divided into four-leg, five-leg, and six-leg varieties, for example, which each have a different number of legs at the base for support and stability. There are also some IV holders which have wheels on the base for rolling around and others that have flat bases to stay in position.
IV Bag Holder Uses
IV bag holders are used in any situation when IV bags and infusion therapy are necessary. IV supplies are used for providing patients with essential fluids and medications, delivered intravenously.
