What Is a Polyurethane Catheter?
Polyurethane catheters include all catheters that are primarily made from polyurethane. Polyurethane is a type of plastic which is used throughout the medical industry and beyond, with a very wide range of applications and uses. It can be used in anything from building insulation to refrigerators.
There are many different materials which can be used to make catheters, from polyethylene to latex. Polyurethane has various pros and cons. It is quite stretchy, but also has a certain degree of stiffness to help it stay in position. It is also one of the catheter materials that is recommended and suitable for implantation beneath the skin.
Because of this fact, many polyurethane catheters are used as IV lines or central venous catheters. They can have different lengths, diameters, designs, and numbers of lumens, and they may have a wide range of purposes, too.

How Does a Polyurethane Catheter Work?
The way in which polyurethane catheters work will depend on which particular type of polyurethane catheter is being used. In general, these catheters are used for implantation and insertion through the skin. A puncture or incision will therefore need to be made in the body, after anesthesia has been applied, before the polyurethane catheter can be inserted. It may be connected at one end to an IV bag or container of some kind to feed in fluids or drain liquids out of the body.
Polyurethane Catheter Sizes
Since there are many different types of polyurethane catheters, there are also a lot of different sizes to consider. They can vary in length, from short catheters of just 300mm up to much longer products of 700mm or more. Diameters can also vary from as small as 5 or 6 Fr up to 20 Fr and above, using the standard French gauge measurement system.
Polyurethane Catheter Types
There are many types of polyurethane catheter. This includes central venous catheters, which are designed to be inserted into one of the main blood vessels near the heart to provide fluids or monitor the blood. There are also IV polyurethane catheters which are attached to IV bags and can feed fluids into the body directly via the bloodstream. There are also drainage polyurethane catheters which may be used to drain fluids from areas like the kidneys.
Polyurethane Catheter Uses
There are lots of potential uses for polyurethane catheters, and polyurethane is usually chosen as a catheter material when stiffness is needed and the catheter has to be inserted under the skin. They can be used to provide medicines for chemotherapy, monitor the blood of patients with blood conditions, and much more.
