What Is a Dover Catheter?
Dover catheters are a type of Foley catheter produced by the Covidien company and branded with the Dover name. These catheters are used to help patients pass urine freely and comfortably and can be beneficial in an array of situations, such as after surgery or for patients with incontinence.
A Dover catheter typically consists of a long, flexible, hollow tube. At one end of the tube is a narrow tip which is inserted into the body via the urethra. The other end of the tube can be connected to a receptacle, like a catheter bag, for the collection of urine as it passes along the tube.

How Does a Dover Catheter Work?
A Dover catheter works just like any other kind of Foley catheter or urinary catheter. There is a narrow tip at one end, which may have slightly different shapes depending on the catheter you use and which is inserted into the urethra of the patient. The tube is then pushed up the urethra until it reaches the bladder. Urine can then flow through the catheter tube into a receptacle like a catheter bag, which is connected to the Dover catheter at the other end.
Dover Catheter Sizes
It's possible to find Dover Foley catheters in a wide range of sizes, and they're measured using the French scale system. The French scale system is an easy way to see how wide the diameter of each catheter is, and sizes typically range from around 5 Fr up to 20 Fr for Dover catheters.
Dover Catheter Types
There are various types of Dover catheters. They are all used in similar ways, being inserted into the urethra and allowing urine to pass out of the body, but can come in different forms.
