What Is a Urethral Catheter?
A urethral catheter is one that is designed to be placed inside the urethra, typically to allow the flow of urine from the bladder and out of the body into a urinary bag or container of some kinds. Another name for these catheters is urinary catheter.
Urethral catheters come in different forms. They all consist of a long, hollow tube that can be divided into various lumens and is designed to be pushed into the urethra and inserted into the body until it reaches the bladder.
They may have differently-shaped tips in order to be easily and comfortably inserted into the bodies of different patients. They may also be made from different materials, including rubber, latex, silicone, and PVC.
These catheters are used when patients are struggling to urinate or find it difficult or painful to control their urination, so can be vital in many different cases and situations.

How Does a Urethral Catheter Work?
Most urethral catheters work in a similar way. Typically, the end of the catheter will need to be lubricated first, or it may come with its own pre-lubricated coating. This will aid with the insertion of the catheter. It can then be pushed into the urethra and inserted several inches into the body until it makes contact with the bladder. At that point, urine will begin to flow out and collect in the connected urinary bag or receptacle. Once urine has finished flowing, the catheter can be removed or it may be left in place, if it is an indwelling model.
Urethral Catheter Sizes
There are many different sizes of urethral catheters in order to work in patients of different ages and body types. They are measured using the French gauge system, with average diameters ranging from as low as 6 Fr for pediatric patients up to 22 Fr and higher for adults.
Urethral Catheter Types
There are many different types of urethral catheters, and it’s possible to divide these catheters into various groups and categories based on their design or the materials used to make them. There are red rubber urethral catheters, for example, made from red rubber, as well as silicone urethral catheters. There are also straight tip and coudé urethral catheters, which have differently-shaped endings.
intermittent Catheters: These are standard when it comes to urinary catheters and they are done several times a day, since the catheter doesn’t remain inside the body.
Indwelling Catheters: These are types of catheters that are inserted through the urethra and stay in place for a period of time. This is meant for long-term use and most indwelling catheters need to be changed every 3 months.
Suprapubic Catheters: These are inserted through a hole in the abdomen and stay in place for a while. This type of catheter is ideal when the urethra passage is blocked or damaged.
Urethral Catheter Uses
There are many potential cases in which urethral catheters can be used. Their main function is to facilitate the flow of urine from the bladder out of the body when this would usually be difficult, painful, or simply impossible for the patient. They can be used in cases when patients are suffering from incontinence, urinary retention, blockages in the urethra, prostate problems, and a range of other conditions.
