What Is a Coude Catheter?
Coude catheters are a particular type of catheter that can be easily identified due to their bent or curved tip. The word "coude" is French and translates to "bent" or "curved" in English, and you may sometimes hear these kinds of catheters referred to as curved catheters.
Apart from their uniquely-shaped tips, coude catheters are just like any other kind of catheter. They are long, hollow tubes that are typically inserted into the human body via the urethra, connecting with the bladder and allowing urine to pass out into an attached urine bag or container. They make it easy for urine to flow out of the body.
The reason for the curved tip in coude catheters is to allow them to be inserted in patients with certain problems, like blockages in the urethra or other issues that could make a straight tip more difficult to insert.

How Does a Coude Catheter Work?
A coude catheter works just like a standard straight tip catheter. It is inserted into the body via the urethra, pushed several inches inside until it connects with the bladder, and is then used as a conduit for urine to pass out of the body and into a catheter bag. The special coude tip is designed to allow the catheter to pass around blockages more easily or navigate narrow or tight sections of the urethra.
Coude Catheter Sizes
Just like straight tip catheters, coude catheters can come in a range of sizes. Usually, their diameter is measured using the French scale or French gauge system, and sizes can range from as small as 3 Fr for pediatric patients all the way up to 20 Fr or more for adults. These catheters can also vary in length, and different lengths may be used depending on the situation.
Coude Catheter Types
Coude catheters can be broken down into three main types, each with a differently shaped tip. Olive tip coude catheters have a large, rounded end, quite like an olive in shape, which is used to open urethrae that are very narrow. Tiemann tip coude catheters have a long and narrow shape that gets them through very tight spots. Finally, tapered tip coude catheters are the most common variety and are a good balance in size and shape between olive and Tiemann tips.
Coude Catheter Uses
The primary use of coude catheters is to allow urine to drain from the body, and this can be helpful in various situations and with different kinds of patients. Patients who have problems with incontinence or urinary retention, for example, can benefit from the use of coude catheters. Those undergoing operations can also use coude catheters to be able to urinate from the comfort of their hospital bed.
Patients who had cancer radiation in the pelvic area may opt for Coude Catheters, as well as patients with prostatic hyperplasia or surgery. Patients with urethral strictures or any kind of urethral trauma. People who have stoma or false passages and they are also used in female patients who have an atrophic vagina. This type of catheter is mostly used by males, although women can be prescribed Coude Catheters if their anatomy won’t allow for insertion of straight tip catheters.
How to Use a Coude Catheter
- Ensure your hands are properly sanitized with warm soap before starting the process.
- Wipe the area around the urethra using antiseptic wipes.
- If possible, wear disposable gloves to be extra careful.
- Open the catheter package and put on sterile lubricating jelly that helps decrease friction.
- Insert the catheter slowly inside the urethra taking deep breaths.
- Do not be forceful when inserting it.
- Slowly remove the catheter once you’re done urinating.
- Dispose the catheter and all supplies used.
