What Is a 5-0 Suture?
Medical sutures are very important pieces of medical equipment, and there are various sizes of medical sutures available for use. Sutures are typically measured using the USP (United States Pharmacopeia) system, with sizes ranging from 10-0 USP (the narrowest) to around 7 USP (the widest). 5-0 sutures are one of the most commonly-used sizes during surgery or wound repair.
A 5-0 suture measures approximately 0.1mm in diameter. It's wider than the finest monofilament sutures, which are usually around 10-0 or 9-0 in size, but narrower than thick, braided sutures that are around 4 or 5, according to the USP scale.
5-0 sutures have various uses, but are most commonly used for large blood vessel repair. They're very effective for stitching damaged vessels, as well as for skin closure around the body on the limbs and face. 5-0 sutures are also used for tendon repairs, as well, so they’re a very important member of the medical suture family.

When to Use a 5-0 Suture?
It's always important to use the correct size of suture for each situation, and 5-0 sutures are the right choice in many cases. They're most commonly used for dealing with damaged large blood vessels, but are also used for stitching skin back together after a wound or after surgery. They're also useful for dealing with damaged tendons in various areas around the body.
5-0 Suture Sizes
As the name implies, 5-0 sutures all have the same diameter. They're very specifically and carefully manufactured to adhere to the strict USP standards, so all 5-0 sutures will be the exact same diameter. However, it is possible to purchase 5-0 sutures in different lengths, from relatively small 10 inch lengths up to 30 inches or more.
5-0 Suture Types
There are many different kinds of 5-0 sutures, from polyfilament sutures to monofilament sutures. In general, we can divide 5-0 sutures into two main types: absorbable and non-absorbable. An absorbable 5-0 suture is one that will degrade on its own in the body and doesn't need to be removed manually. A non-absorbable 5-0 suture will not simply dissolve or degrade by itself and will either need to be left in for a long-term period or removed by a medical practitioner.
5-0 Suture Uses
There are various uses of 5-0 sutures. They're very effective for stitching up open wounds or surgical sites after an operation, for example. They're also used for suture procedures on blood vessels and tendons, primarily in the limbs and upper body.
5-0 Suture Suppliers
Aesculap, Acuderm, Covidien, and Applied Dental are some of the leading suppliers of 5-0 sutures.
