What Is an Intermittent Catheter?
An intermittent catheter is a type of urinary catheter that, as the name implies, is designed to be used intermittently. It can be inserted, used, and then removed, all in the space of a short period of time, according to the patient's needs.
These catheters are often used for self-catheterization, allowing patients to insert, use, and remove the catheters on their own, without the need for medical assistance from a doctor or nurse.
Like other kinds of urinary catheters, they consist of a long and hollow tube with a narrow tip at one end, which can be inserted into the body via the urethra. At the other end is an open-ended section which allows the catheter to be connected to a catheter bag for collection.
Intermittent catheters are among the most commonly-used kinds of urinary catheters, with many patients around the world relying on them on a daily basis.

How Does an Intermittent Catheter Work?
The way in which intermittent catheters work is very simple. The narrow end of the catheter will first need to be lubricated, or it may arrive pre-lubricated and ready for insertion. It can then be pushed into the urethra and further into the body until it reaches the bladder and urine begins to flow out into the bag at the other end. Once the flow of urine has stopped, the catheter can be removed and disposed of.
Intermittent Catheter Sizes
Patients of different ages and sizes may need to use intermittent catheters, so they are available in a wide range of diameters and lengths. Diameters are measured with the French scale system, with average sizes from 10 Fr to 18 Fr, although wider and narrow variants are available. Lengths may also vary, with female intermittent catheters usually smaller than male ones.
Intermittent Catheter Types
Intermittent catheters can be divided into different subcategories, such as male and female. Male intermittent catheters are usually a little longer than female ones, as they need to travel further through the urethra to reach the bladder. There are also pre-lubricated and non-lubricated variants of intermittent catheters; the pre-lubricated products arrive with a special lubricant coating already applied to aid insertion.
Intermittent Catheter Uses
Intermittent catheters are designed to drain urine from the body. They can be used for patients who may be struggling to urinate or find it painful to urinate in a conventional manner. They’re also used for people suffering from problems like incontinence or urinary retention, as well as those who are bed-ridden or have mobility problems making it harder to use a toilet.
