What Is a Multi Lumen Catheter?
A multi lumen catheter is one that has more than one lumen. A lumen is a channel or tunnel inside the main catheter tube. These channels are used for transporting different fluids, which may include bodily fluids like bile, urine, or blood, as well as external fluids like medicines and nutrients for the body.
Multi lumen catheters are very common and used often in the medical world, as it is much more convenient to have multiple lumens in one catheter, rather than trying to connect multiple single lumen catheters to the body instead.
These kinds of catheters are available in a huge range of sizes and types, from urinary multi lumen catheters to dialysis catheters and more. They can be used for a lot of different processes, too, and are an essential tool for many different medical procedures and operations.

How Does a Multi-Lumen Catheter Work?
The way in which a multi lumen catheter works depends on the type of catheter you’re using and the process you’re using it for. In general, these catheters have multiple channels or lumens so that each lumen can transport a different substance. In a venous catheter, for example, one lumen might carry one type of medicine and the other lumen will be used for additional fluids.
Multi-Lumen Catheter Sizes
Multi lumen catheters can be found in a very broad range of lengths and diameters as they have many different potential uses. Some are short and narrow, while others are long and relatively wide. The diameter is usually measured with the French scale system, with sizes ranging from as low as 3 Fr all the way up to 26 Fr and higher.
Multi-Lumen Catheter Types
There are various types of multi lumen catheters, as there are lots of different kinds of catheters that might need multiple lumens or channels. Some Foley or urinary catheters can have multiple channels to allow for a balloon to be inflated and urine to be drained, for example, while dialysis catheters always have two channels - one for blood to be taken from the body and another for the cleaned blood to be returned. There are various other kinds of venous catheters that also have multiple lumens.
Multi-Lumen Catheter Uses
There are many different potential uses of multi lumen catheters. They may be used for dialysis, for example, where the patient is connected to a dialysis machine with the aid of a multi lumen catheter and the lumens carry blood to and from the patient. Multi lumen catheters can also be used for patients who are suffering from different diseases and conditions and need fluids, blood, or medicines infused into their body via the catheter channels. Multi lumen urinary catheters may be used to drain urine and send medication to the bladder.
