What Is an Umbilical Catheter?
An umbilical catheter, as the name implies, is one that is designed to be inserted into the blood vessels within the umbilical cord.
Umbilical cords usually have two arteries and one vein. Umbilical catheters can be inserted into any of these vessels, and there are venous and arterial models available for each type, each with their own distinct purpose.
These catheters are most commonly used to deliver essential medicines and fluids to premature babies or those that are born with illnesses or health conditions requiring immediate treatment after birth.
Like other catheters, they consist of a long, flexible, hollow tube which may be divided into multiple lumens to deliver fluids or diagnose problems.
These kinds of catheters are very helpful as they allow babies to be treated for different conditions or monitored without the need for multiple injections or needles.

How Does an Umbilical Catheter Work?
The way in which umbilical catheters are used will depend on whether an artery catheter or venous catheter is being used. First, the umbilical cord will need to be cut off and the right blood vessel (artery or vein) will need to be located. The catheter can then be inserted directly into the blood vessels and an X-ray scan will help to check that they're in position before fluids are fed in or blood is taken. The catheter is usually taped in place on the baby's belly.
Umbilical Catheters Risks
- Blood flow can be interrupted to the organs
- Formation of blood clots in the catheter
- Infections
Umbilical Catheters Placement
Usually in the umbilical cord you can find two umbilical arteries and one umbilical vein. When the doctor cuts the umbilical cord, it is possible to find the blood vessels. The umbilical catheters will then be inserted in the blood vessel, then to determine the final position, an x-ray is done. Soon as the catheters are in the right position, they are held steady with silk thread. The doctor will place the catheter near the baby’s stomach and secure it with a tape.
Umbilical Catheter Sizes
Like other kinds of catheter, umbilical catheters can vary in size, although they tend to be quite narrow and small, due to the fact that they are used in infants. Average diameters for these catheters range from 3 Fr up to 10 Fr, using the standard French gauge measurement system.
Umbilical Catheter Types
There are two different types of umbilical catheters: umbilical artery catheters (UAC) and umbilical venous catheters (UVC). The UAC is designed to take blood from the infant or monitor the child's blood pressure, while the UAC is able to deliver fluids and medicines to the baby without the need for an IV line.
Umbilical Catheter Uses
There are many situations in which umbilical catheters may be used. For example, one may be needed if a baby is struggling to breathe or has blood pressure problems that need to be monitored. An umbilical catheter can also be used to deliver vital medicines to the child if it is born premature, has feeding problems, or has other conditions that require urgent and immediate treatment.
