What Is a Ureteral Catheter?

A ureteral catheter is one that is designed to be inserted into the ureter or urinary tract, which is the passage connecting the kidney and the bladder. There are various reasons why these catheters may be used, but the most common reasons are to deliver contrast dye to the area for scans to diagnose blockages, as well as for drainage purposes.

Like other catheters, ureteral catheters consist of a long, hollow, flexible tube, which may be made of various materials and come in different sizes. The tube may be inserted in different ways, either via the urethra or through an incision in the skin. In either case, it needs to pass through the bladder to connect with the ureter.

Ureteral catheters have specific applications and are vital in situations when patients have ureter blockages, renal problems, and other conditions.

How Does a Ureteral Catheter Work?

Ureteral catheters are designed to be inserted into the ureter, which is the duct connecting the kidney and the bladder. Typically, these catheters access the ureter by first passing through the urethra. They will need to be lubricated and then pushed into the urethra, traveling up into the body, through the bladder and on into the ureter. They may also be inserted via the skin, with an incision made in the belly to feed the tube through to the bladder.

Ureteral Catheter Sizes

As with other catheters, ureteral catheters may vary in size, with smaller catheters needed for younger patients and certain situations and larger catheters used for adults. Sizes are measured using the French gauge system, with average ranges between 5 Fr and 10 Fr.

Ureteral Catheter Types

Most ureteral catheters are similar in terms of design, but they can differ in a few key areas, such as size and material. Some are made from silicone, while others are crafted of red rubber, which is a softer and more flexible material that may make insertion less painful and more comfortable overall for the patient. These catheters can also have different types of tip, with some having straight tips and others having coudé or bent tips to bypass blockages.

Ureteral Catheter Uses

There are many potential cases in which ureteral catheters can be of use. Their primary purpose is for long-term drainage, relieving obstructions, and protecting renal functions in patients who may have urethral blockages, renal failure, or other health problems affecting these areas of the body. They can also be designed to provide access to the urinary tract, navigate obstructed or narrow ureters, guide wires into position, or deliver contrast media into the body before X-rays and other scans.
