What Is a DeLee Catheter?
A DeLee catheter, which can also be known as a DeLee suction catheter or simply a suction catheter, is a special kind of catheter that is used for manual newborn resuscitation. In other words, these catheters can save newborn lives, so they’re very important.
A DeLee catheter usually consists of the following components: a mucus trap for collecting mucus that is sucked out via the catheter, a whistle-tip end for easy insertion, a sterile catheter tube, and a suction tube with a molded mouthpiece for the user to suck through.
DeLee suction catheters are specially designed to be used safely in infants. They can be vital in cases where an infant's mucus levels are high, making it difficult or impossible for them to breathe naturally. The DeLee catheter can aid in emergency situations to remove excess mucus and open the respiratory passageways.

How Does a DeLee Catheter Work?
A DeLee catheter works in the following way: first, the whistle tip end of the catheter is inserted into the trach. The doctor or nurse inserting the catheter then places the mouthpiece in their mouth, covers the hole in the tube with their finger, and then sucks on it like a straw. This suction draws out mucus from the trach into the mucus trap, where it gathers, making it easier for the baby to breathe.
DeLee Catheter Sizes
DeLee catheters are available in a small range of different sizes. Since these types of catheters are used exclusively on newborn babies, the size range isn't as wide as it would be for other catheters. So you can find DeLee catheters in sizes like 8 Fr and 10 Fr, which are just right for infants.
DeLee Catheter Types
DeLee catheters can be made by different brands and have slightly different looks, but all generally follow the same basic design. They always consist of the same key components, including the suction tube, molded mouthpiece, and mucus trap. All of these parts are essential for the functioning of a DeLee catheter.
DeLee Catheter Uses
The primary use of a DeLee suction catheter is to help newborns that are struggling to breathe in emergency situations. Usually, an electrical suction machine is used in these cases, but if a machine is not available, or if it is broken, a DeLee catheter can be used. It may be life-saving in situations when newborns have excessive amounts of mucus in their throat. DeLee catheters can also be used by vets and dog breeders to perform similar life-saving procedures on newborn puppies that are finding it hard to breathe.
How to Use a Delee Catheter
- This device is made of plastic and is ideal for emergency purposes, when an electrical suction machine is not working or far from reach.
- Place the tube with the opening at the end into the tracheostomy opening.
- Place the tube with a mouthpiece inside your mouth.
- Place a finger over the opening in the tube near your mouth and suck on the tube like a straw.
- The mucus will come out of the trach and go inside the trap.
- Remember to bring a DeLee suction trap when traveling with a newborn who has respiratory difficulties.
Common Risks when Suctioning Babies
Suctioning is stressful to both babies and parents. Suctioning a baby is a routine procedure that can increase the stress causing further problems. Complications include:
- Atelectasis
- Airway trauma
- Infection
- Lung Perforation
- Bradycardia and arrhythmias
- Hypoxia
