What Is a Straight Catheter?
A straight catheter, as the name implies, is a catheter with a straight design and tip. It consists of a soft or semi-flexible, thin, hollow tube that can be inserted into the urethra to allow urine to pass out of the body and into a receptacle of some kind, like a catheter bag.
The main distinguishing characteristic of straight catheters is their shape. They feature a completely straight tip. This is the most common form of urinary catheter shape, and straight catheters are considered to be the standard design for urological use.
Inside, straight tip catheters may divide into two channels, or lumens. One of these channels facilitates the flow of urine out of the body, while the second is used to inflate a small balloon at the end, which helps to hold the catheter in position.

How Does a Straight Catheter Work?
Like other urinary catheters, straight catheters need to be inserted into the urethra of the patient. First, they will need to be lubricated at the tip to ease the insertion process. They can then be pushed into the body several inches until they reach the bladder. At that point, urine should begin to flow out through the tube and into a collection bag, which is connected to the catheter at the other end.
Straight Catheter Sizes
Straight catheters are available in a range of sizes to suit different patients. They are traditionally measured using the French scale system, with average ratings ranging from 8 Fr up to 16 Fr, although smaller and larger sizes are available.
Straight Catheter Types
Straight catheters are all used for the same purpose and work in the same way, but they can be slightly different in terms of their design and the materials used to make them. Red rubber straight catheters, for example, are made of a very soft and flexible rubber material for easy insertion, while PVC straight catheters are made of plastic, which is stiffer and provides greater control. There are also male straight catheters and female straight catheters, with the female varieties usually being shorter in length.
Straight Catheter Uses
As with other urinary catheters, straight catheters can be given to people who are suffering from a wide range of urinary conditions, problems, or difficulties, such as urinary retention or incontinence. They may also be used when patients are bed-ridden or unable to access or use a toilet. They can also be used for self-insertion for people who need assistance urinating in their day to day lives.
