What Is a Peritoneal Catheter?
A peritoneal catheter is one that is designed to be implanted under the skin in the peritoneal cavity to deliver medicines or fluids into the body, as well as being able to drain excess fluids out of spaces like the peritoneal cavity and abdominal cavity.
Like other catheters, peritoneal catheters consist of a hollow plastic tube. The tube is curled at one end in order to remain in place in the body tissue once inserted, while the other end is straight and can be easily connected to a bag of medicines or receptacle to collect drained fluids.
The use of peritoneal catheters is favored in many situations, especially in cases where patients require extended or prolonged treatment, like chemotherapy or dialysis. It's minimally invasive and requires very small incisions in the skin, with a low risk of contamination.

How Does a Peritoneal Catheter Work?
Before insertion of a peritoneal catheter, an area of the body will be identified as the insertion site. Medications may be provided to ease pain and prevent any nausea for the patient, and sedatives or general anesthesia may also be used. The insertion site will be shaved and sterilized, with a small incision made before the catheter is inserted through the skin and into the cavity. A second incision is then made nearby where the external part of the catheter can be implanted via a tunnel under the skin. The catheter is then stitched or stuck in position, ready to supply medicine or drain fluids.
Peritoneal Catheter Sizes
Peritoneal catheters can vary in terms of both size and length. Average lengths for these catheters range from around 400mm to 500mm, but some may be longer or shorter. In terms of diameter, they can vary from 12 Fr to 16 Fr, but may be larger or smaller, according to the patient's needs.
Peritoneal Catheter Types
Peritoneal catheters can vary slightly in terms of their type and design. Many of them are single-lumen catheters, with one channel for fluids to flow through. Others may have a second lumen or channel and can be used for specific purposes, such as dialysis. There are also pediatric peritoneal catheters, designed for use in children, which are smaller and narrower in size.
Peritoneal Catheter Uses
Peritoneal catheters can have various uses, as they're equally capable of supplying fluids into the body and draining them out. One of the most common uses of these catheters is to deliver anti-cancer drugs into patients' bodies when they are suffering from cancer. They can also be used for other procedures and treatments like serial paracentesis, which involves draining excess fluids from the abdomen, or dialysis in patients who have renal failure.
