What Is an Irrigation Catheter?
Irrigation catheters are a special kind of catheter that is used for irrigating the bladder. Bladder irrigation is a medical procedure in which sterile fluids are flushed into the bladder in order to clean the area and cleanse the urinary system. Usually, this is done after surgery on the bladder or other parts of the urinary system.
An irrigation catheter is a vital piece of equipment for this procedure and makes it possible to easily transfer fluids into the bladder, as well as draining urine out and collecting it in a bag for disposal.

How Does an Irrigation Catheter Work?
Irrigation catheters work in much the same way as urinary catheters. They have a narrow tip at one end which is lubricated and inserted into the urethra, before being pushed into the body until it reaches the bladder. Inside the catheter, there are three channels, or lumens. One is used to inflate a balloon to block the catheter in position, another is used to drain urine from the bladder, and a third is used to irrigate the bladder and administer fluids into the body.
Irrigation Catheter Sizes
As with other kinds of catheters, irrigation catheters are available in a wide range of sizes in order to suit the varied needs of different patients. They're usually quite similar in length, although female versions may be shorter, but they can vary quite a lot in diameter, with sizes ranging from 6 Fr up to 24 Fr, using the traditional French scale measurement system.
Irrigation Catheter Types
Irrigation catheters are all very similar in terms of design and structure, always featuring three lumens and an inflatable balloon at one end. However, they may vary in terms of the materials used. Most irrigation catheters are made with latex, but it is possible to find latex-free irrigation catheters for use in patients who may suffer from allergic reactions or irritation when latex is used in their bodies.
