What Is a Fogarty Catheter?
A Fogarty catheter, which can also be known as an embolectomy catheter, is a specific kind of catheter used in embolectomies. Like other kinds of catheters, they consist of a hollow tube, through which fluid can flow. At one end, there is an inflatable “balloon” section that can be inflated to aid in the embolectomy procedure.
These catheters are named after the man who invented them: Dr. Thomas J. Fogarty. Fogarty invented the Fogarty catheter in 1961 as he was looking for ways to make embolectomy procedures easier and less risky. His design caught on and has been used countless times over the years in healthcare facilities worldwide.
The main function of a Fogarty catheter is to help remove small masses, called emboli, from blood vessels, in a way that is not excessively invasive or risky for the patient. It’s a very important kind of catheter that can save lives and help to prevent serious circulatory and organ damages.

How Does a Fogarty Catheter Work?
A Fogarty catheter is specially designed to be easily inserted into blood vessels, but it still needs to be handled with a lot of care and precision. Trained professionals may first anesthetize an area of the body to numb it before using a needle to penetrate the skin and guide the catheter through into the blood vessel where a blockage is present. The balloon part of the catheter can then be inflated to push out the blockage.
Fogarty Catheter Sizes
Like other kinds of catheters, Fogarty catheters are available in a wide range of different sizes and are typically measured using the French scale system. Different French scale ratings are used to show the diameter of the catheter tube. For Fogarty catheters, the most common sizes tend to be quite narrow, ranging from the likes of 2 and 3 Fr up to 6 or 7 Fr.
Fogarty Catheter Types
There’s only really one main type of Fogarty catheter. The same design that Dr. Thomas J. Fogarty created back in 1961 is still being used together, with some minor improvements and alterations over the years in terms of sizes and materials used. Fogarty catheters can therefore have some slight cosmetic differences or may vary a little in terms of size, but all have the same basic design and structure.
Fogarty Arterial Embolectomy Catheter
- This catheter provides an easy and simple removal of soft, fresh emboli and thrombi from the arterial system.
- Hand-tied using a recessed winding technique to ensure balloon to catheter.
- Balloon shows a symmetry that exerts uniform contact with vessel walls for uniform pressure and precise traction.
- Soft, rounded end provides simple insertion for reduced trauma.
Fogarty Fortis Arterial Embolectomy Catheter
- These are ideal for aggressive removal of emboli and thrombi from the arterial system.
- Built with durable materials that are more everlasting to withstand greater pull-force.
- Barium addition to the catheter shaft provides radiopacity.
Over-the-Wire Fogarty Thru-Lumen Embolectomy Catheter
- This is a multi-purpose, guidewire-compatible design that enables removal of soft, fresh emboli and thrombi and also provides liquid delivery, temporary occlusion and blood sampling.
- Solution for distal thrombus removal in the arterial system.
- Barium addition to the catheter shaft material and stainless-steel markers proximal and distal to the balloon allowing for radio capacity.
Fogarty Corkscrew Catheter
- This device is used to dislodge adherent material in native vessels and synthetic grafts.
- Good for thrombus extraction that is too resistant for an elastomeric balloon.
- Design allows for fibrous material entrapping.
- Flexibility and radiopacity.
Fogarty Graft Thrombectomy Catheter
- Ideal for removal of organized adherence thrombus from synthetic grafts, such as aortofemoral grafts.
- Good for thrombus that is too resistant for an elastomeric balloon.
- Pulling force control by adjusting the diameter.
Fogarty Venous Thrombectomy Catheter
- Designed for removal of thrombi in the venous system.
- Long, soft tip facilitates advancement past the venous valves without undue trauma.
Fogarty Catheter Uses
A Fogarty catheter or embolectomy catheter is primarily used during a procedure called an embolectomy. This procedure is used to remove abnormal masses that are flowing through the bloodstream and could cause blockages in blood vessels. Embolectomies are quite complex procedures and Fogarty catheters help to make them easier to carry out, but there are still risks associated with this operation and it is generally used as a last resort.
