What Is a Female Catheter?
Female catheters are catheters designed for use in female patients. They are typically shorter and simpler than male catheters, as they don't need to be inserted as far into the body to reach the bladder.
There are various types of female catheters, from intermittent catheters that are designed to be quickly inserted, used, and then taken out as needed throughout the day, as well as indwelling urinary catheters that are made to be left in place and used for extended periods of time. There are even external female catheters that allow urine to be collected without any insertion required.
Since there are various types available, they can differ in terms of size and design. They usually all feature a long, hollow tube through which urine can pass. They also are usually connected to a bag, called a catheter bag, at one end, with the other end being attached to the urethra or inserted into it.

How Does a Female Catheter Work?
Female catheters work just like male catheters. Most of them featured a narrow tip at one end. This is inserted into the urethra. The catheter first needs to be lubricated to aid with insertion, and the labia need to be parted to access the urethra more easily. The tube can then be pushed a couple of inches into the body until urine starts to flow out. The urine will flow through the catheter tube and into a collection bag.
Female Catheter Sizes
One of the main differences between female catheters and male catheters is that female catheters are usually much shorter. This is because they have a shorter distance to travel to reach the bladder via the urethra, so they're often just 6" long, on average. They can have different diameters, too, ranging from 5 Fr up to 24 Fr, using the French gauge system.
Female Catheter Types
There are many different types of female catheters. A common variety is the straight female length catheter, which is an intermittent catheter suitable for self-insertion. It features a straight tube and tip and is one of the easiest varieties to use. There are also hydrophilic female catheters that have a special coating on them which can be activated with water to lubricate the catheter for you for easier insertion. There are closed system female catheters, too, which come connected to collection bags, ready for use. There are even external female catheters that don’t need to be pushed into the urethra and can be attached between the labia for urine collection.
Female Catheter Uses
Female catheters can be used in a variety of situations. They are most commonly used in cases where women are suffering from incontinence, urinary retention, or other issues that may make urination difficult or hard to control. They can also be used in people with reduced mobility or those undergoing surgery and confined to their hospital beds.
