What Is a Hydrophilic Catheter?
Hydrophilic catheters are a particular kind of urinary or Foley catheter that come equipped with their own lubricated coating. This is designed to make insertion of the catheter easier and less painful for patients.
A lot of patients experience pain and discomfort when inserting catheters themselves or having catheters inserted by a medical professional. Hydrophilic catheters are designed to help these patients have a less stressful and uncomfortable experience.
Like other kinds of Foley catheters, hydrophilic catheters consist of a narrow tip at one end, which may be straight or rounded to suit the patient’s needs and which is inserted into the urethra with the aid of its lubricated coating.
At the other end, the catheter is typically connected to a catheter bag where urine can be collected, and there may be a separate lumen which can be used to inflate a small balloon along the tube to hold the catheter in position.

How Does a Hydrophilic Catheter Work?
The way in which hydrophilic catheters work is quite simple: they're manufactured with a fine layer of pre-lubricated coating on the outside of the catheter's surface. This special coating is activated by bursting a packet of saline solution around the catheter tube itself. This results in the catheter becoming smooth and slippery, making it much easier to insert into the urethra.
Hydrophilic Catheter Sizes
Hydrophilic catheters are available in a wide range of sizes to suit different patients' needs. The diameter of these catheters is measured using the French scale system, with average sizes ranging from 8 Fr up to 16 Fr. They can also have varying lengths to suit patients of different ages and sizes.
Hydrophilic Catheter Types
Hydrophilic catheters usually fall into the category of intermittent catheters, which means that they are designed to be used intermittently, for short periods of time, rather than long-term. They can be divided into two main types: straight tip and coudé. Straight tip hydrophilic catheters have straight tips for insertion, while coudé catheters have a rounded tip which may aid in insertion for some patients.
Hydrophilic Catheter Uses
Hydrophilic catheters are typically used as intermittent catheters for people who are experiencing urinary problems, like urinary retention or incontinence. They can be used in many other patients too who struggle or find it impossible to pass urine in the conventional way. These catheters are specially designed to suit people who find it painful or uncomfortable to insert a catheter and can be used both in hospital settings and day-to-day life.
