What Is a Thoracic Catheter?
A thoracic catheter, which can also be known as a chest tube, chest drain, or intercostal drain, is a special type of drainage catheter. As the name implies, it is used to drain the thoracic or chest area of the body, specifically the pleural space surrounding the lungs.
It is possible for various fluids to build up around the pleural space, including blood, pus, chyle, and even urine, putting pressure on the lungs and heart. A thoracic catheter is vital for draining these fluids out of the body.

How Does a Thoracic Catheter Work?
The insertion technique for thoracic catheters is quite a complicated one and needs to be carried out with extreme care. The insertion site in the torso needs to be identified, cleaned with an antiseptic solution like iodine, and numbed with the aid of local anesthetic. Once the area is numb, a small incision is made and a passage is formed through the muscle and into the chest. The tube can then pass through this passage until it reaches the pleural space.
