What Is a Mersilene Suture?
Mersilene sutures are a branded form of polyester sutures made by the Ethicon company. Crafted from braided polyester, these sutures are similar to other sorts of polyfilament sutures from other brands, including Ethibond and Dagrofil, and they're favored by many surgeons due to their ease-of-use, high tensile strength and low tissue reactivity levels.
Mersilene sutures are non-absorbable. This means that they will not naturally dissolve or be absorbed by the body on their own, so they will either have to be left in position for a long-term period or manually removed by a surgeon once the surgical site has had time to heal over.
These sutures are made of ethylene terephthalate, put together with high molecular weight, long-chain fibers, making them ideal for use in a range of different procedures involving soft tissue repairs. They're most commonly used for cardiovascular procedures, but are also useful for ophthalmic and neurological procedures, as well.
How Does a Mersilene Suture Work?
Most medical sutures work in the same basic way, and Mersilene sutures are no different. The first step of the procedure involves selecting and preparing the right size of sutures. Once a suitable size of Mersilene suture has been chosen, it can be threaded into a surgical needle, ready for stitching. The surgeon can then use one of various different stitching techniques to feed the Mersilene suture into the surgical site and stitch an injured or operated area back together.
Mersilene Suture Sizes
It's possible to find Mersilene sutures in a wide range of different sizes, including both lengths and diameters. When it comes to diameter, medical sutures like Mersilene sutures are measured using the USP system, with common sizes ranging from 3-0 to 4-0, 5-0, and 6-0. Other sizes are also available.
Mersilene Suture Types
Mersilene sutures are a specific type of suture, produced to a specific standard by the Ethicon company. They cannot be divided into different types, as they have their own unique design and structure. However, it is possible to find Mersilene sutures in different sizes to suit different situations. There are also many other types of medical sutures out there, including other varieties of non-absorbable sutures, like silk, nylon, and surgical steel medical sutures.
Mersilene Suture Uses
Mersilene sutures have a wide range of uses. Like other braided polyester sutures, they're very useful for certain kinds of cardiovascular and valvular surgery. They're also useful for certain neurological procedures, too. They may be used for both adult patients and pediatric patients.
Mersilene Suture Suppliers
When it comes to Mersilene sutures, Ethicon is the only brand that provides this specific variety.
