What Is a Monofilament Suture?
A monofilament suture is one that is composed entirely of a single stranded filament material, like nylon or PDS. This is opposed to a polyfilament suture, which is composed of several different filaments that are all twisted or braided together into one.
There are various pros and cons associated with monofilament sutures. On the plus side, these sutures tend to be less risky to work with and have a lower chance of causing tissue trauma. This makes them well-suited for certain delicate applications, like repairing blood vessels. On the downside, monofilament sutures have less tensile strength.
There are various different types of monofilament sutures, including both absorbable and non-absorbable varieties. Some common examples include Monocryl monofilament sutures, which are used for subcutaneous tissue closure, as well as nylon sutures, which are often used for superficial skin closure.

How Does a Monofilament Suture Work?
The way in which monofilament sutures work is relatively simple and similar to other kinds of medical sutures. First, a surgeon will need to select the right size of monofilament suture to suit the situation, as well as choosing the specific type of monofilament suture they want to work with. They can then attach the suture to a surgical needle and begin using it to stitch tissue, incisions, and wounds together. Depending on whether the monofilament sutures being used are absorbable or non-absorbable, they may then be left in the body to degrade or removed at a later date.
Monofilament Suture Sizes
Like other kinds of medical sutures, monofilament sutures are available in a wide range of different sizes and measured using the USP system. Common sizes for monofilament sutures include 4-0, 3-0, 2-0, and 0.
Monofilament Suture Types
There are various different types of monofilament sutures, with different materials and brand names being used by various manufacturers and medical suppliers. Some common examples of monofilament sutures include Maxon, PDS, Dermalon, Novafil, and Monocryl. It’s also possible to divide monofilament sutures into both absorbable and non absorbable types; absorbable monofilament sutures degrade naturally in the body, but non-absorbable sutures will need to be removed manually.
Monofilament Suture Uses
Since monofilament sutures tend to be very thin, they have certain specific uses that polyfilament sutures do not have. For instance, monofilament sutures are ideal for stitching delicate tissues or areas with a high risk of tissue trauma, such as small blood vessels. They are often used on a subcutaneous level and can be used to close various surgical incisions, such as abdominal incisions.
