What Is a Butterfly Infusion Set?
A butterfly infusion set, also known as a winged infusion set or scalp vein infusion set, is a special infusion device used for venipuncture. Venipuncture is the process of obtaining IV access for blood sampling or IV therapy.
A butterfly infusion set consists of various key components. It features a hypodermic needle at one end in order to penetrate the skin and gain access to the vein, as well as a pair of flexible "wings" which give the butterfly infusion set its name.
These sets also feature a flexible transparent tube and a connector, which can connect to other devices like syringes, extension tubing, vacuum hubs, or transfusion bags.
Butterfly infusion sets are available in a range of different sizes, and the presence of the butterfly "wings" in the set helps to ensure that placement and insertion are very precise, giving the doctor or nurse a strong level of control over the insertion.

How Does a Butterfly Infusion Set Work?
In order to use a butterfly infusion set, an infusion site will first need to be selected. This is usually somewhere in the forearm. The site will first be cleaned, and then the nurse or doctor will carefully hold onto the wings of the butterfly infusion set in order to guide the needle into a precise position.
It usually enters the vein at a shallow angle, and a small amount of blood will flow out into the tubing to show when the needle is in position. The connector at the end of the butterfly infusion set can be connected to IV bags, syringes, or other tubes and devices to feed fluids or medications into the body.
Butterfly Infusion Set Sizes
Butterfly infusion sets can vary in terms of both tubing size and needle size. The tube of butterfly infusion sets can typically range from 25 to 30cm in length. Meanwhile, the needles attached to each butterfly infusion set will usually range from 18 G to 27 G.
Butterfly Infusion Set Types
Butterfly infusion sets are all very similar in terms of their design and features, and there aren't many different types of butterfly sets. However, there are some slight variances. For example, modern butterfly infusion sets feature slide and lock safety devices that slide over the needle once it has been used, which aims to reduce the risk of needlestick injuries.
Butterfly Infusion Set Uses
There are various situations in which butterfly infusion sets may be preferred over other kinds of IV sets. The main advantage of a butterfly infusion set is the level of accuracy and control it provides, so these sets are very useful for shallow angle entry into various veins around the body, particularly around the forearm but also on the scalp.
