If a patient needs a quick infusion of blood or other fluids, a 19 gauge needle can deliver it more effectively than smaller gauged needles. Due to their size and strength, these hypodermic needles are also useful in various testing protocols.
What is a 19 Gauge Needle Used For?
This needle gauge is larger than more commonly used needle sizes of 21g, 22g and 23 g. Some of its uses include drawing larger quantities of blood at donation sites, infusing blood, medications and fluids rapidly and in medical procedures where a larger, stronger needle is required.

Is Needle Gauge a Standard Measurement?
Hypodermic needles conform to specific inner, outer and wall thickness measurements on the Birmingham wire gauge scale first developed in the 19th century to define the thickness of wire. The medical industry has since adopted the Birmingham scale as a standard measure of needle sizes.
19g needles have the following measurements, which can vary slightly within a specific range:
- Outer diameter: 0.0420 in. (variation range 0.0005 in.) or 1.067 mm (variation range 0.013 mm)
- Inner diameter: 0.0270 in. (variation range 0.0015 in.) or 0.686 mm (variation range 0.038 mm)
- Wall thickness: 0.0075 in. (variation range 0.0005 in.) or 0.191 mm (variation range 0.013 mm)
- Average lengths: 0.75 to 1.5 in.
Another coding system you will find for hypodermic needles is the ISO6009 standardized color coding. The color of the Luer lock, a plastic connector between the needle haft and the syringe, tells you at a glance whether you have the correct needle gauge. The standard ISO6009 color for the 19g needle is cream.
Caregivers often use the 19 gauge needle with an IV line to rapidly push fluids or blood. When paired with a syringe instead, the plunger releases a measured amount of fluids into the patient’s body.
