What Is a Winged Infusion Set?
A winged infusion set, which is also sometimes known as a “butterfly” infusion set, or a scalp vein infusion set, is a particular infusion device used in IV therapy. Winged infusion sets are known for the high level of control and precision they provide to the practitioner during insertion.
Winged infusion sets consist of several components. They typically feature a hypodermic needle at one end, which may have various lengths and will be used to puncture the skin to provide venous access, as well as a pair of “wings” beside the needle.
The wings are what give the winged infusion set its unique name, and they essentially consist of two pieces of plastic flaps that the user can hold onto while they guide the needle into position. The wings help to make entry of the needle as accurate and precise as possible, reducing the risk of incorrect placement or accidental injury to the patient or practitioner.

How Does a Winged Infusion Set Work?
The first step of using a winged infusion set is to pick an injection site for the needle and IV line. Usually, part of the forearm is selected, and the site will need to be cleaned before a nurse or doctor can start inserting the needle. They’ll need to hold onto the two wings beside the needle in order to guide it carefully into position, and these sets usually enter the veins at shallow angles to provide the most comfortable and efficient entry. Once the needle is in place, a small amount of blood should flow back up into the tubing and the winged infusion set can then be connected to IV bags or devices to treat the patient.
Winged Infusion Set Sizes
Winged infusion sets can vary in size, with different tubing lengths and needle sizes. The tubing of winged infusion sets usually varies between 25 to 30cm in length, while the needles may have diameters from 18 to 27 gauge.
Winged Infusion Set Types
Winged infusion sets are a very particular type of infusion set, and they’re all quite similar in terms of their design and shape. However, there are some slight variations in some of the latest sets, which feature new locking mechanisms in order to reduce the risk of needlestick injuries during or after insertion.
Winged Infusion Set Uses
There are various situations in which winged infusion sets may be used or favored over other kinds of IV sets. The main benefit of using a winged infusion set is its high level of accuracy and control, so they’re good for inserting into sites with great care and are the most common type of infusion set used in scalp veins.
