When Do You Use a 28 Gauge Needle?
Some of the most common uses for the 28 gauge needle are routine injections such as vaccines for children. The slender profile slips more easily beneath the skin than larger gauges, causing less discomfort. This is one of the most popular needle sizes for blood test lancets too.

How is Needle Gauge Calculated?
The measurements of a needle define its gauge, and the gauge number is based on the Birmingham wire gauge system. Developed in the 17th century for measuring wire, contemporary medical professionals rely on its standards for defining needle, suture and catheter sizing.
28g gauge needles have the following dimensions:
- Outer diameter: 0.01425 in. (variation 0.00025 in.) or 0.3620 mm (variation 0.0064 mm)
- Inner diameter: 0.00725 in. (variation 0.00075 in.) or 0.184 mm (variation 0.019 mm)
- Wall thickness: 0.00350 in. (variation 0.00025) or 0.0889 mm (variation 0.0064 mm)
- Common lengths: Lancet – 1.6 mm; 0.5 to 1.5 in.
Another way to identify the gauge of your needle is through the ISO color coding system established by the International Organization for Standardization. The ISO6009 color code for 28 gauge needles is blue-green. This means that the Luer lock connector between the 28g needle and the syringe is blue-green.
