What Is an Olive Tip Catheter?
An olive tip catheter is a particular kind of catheter with a curved, olive-shaped tip. They're part of the category of catheters known as coudé catheters, which stand out due to their curved or bent tips that may aid with insertion in certain situations.
For example, if a patient is experiencing some sort of blockage inside the urethra, a standard straight tip catheter may not work or could be painful to insert. In these cases, and others, olive tip catheters can be a gentler and easier option.
In terms of their design and structure, olive tip catheters feature the aforementioned olive-shaped tip at one end. At the other end, they can be connected to a catheter bag for collection of urine. They can have different lengths and diameters and may be made of various materials.

How Does an Olive Tip Catheter Work?
The design of olive tip catheters allows them to be inserted in patients who may have blockages or obstructions in the urethra. The curved shape aids with insertion, and the catheter can then be pushed deeper into the urethra until it connects with the bladder. At that point, urine will be able to flow freely from the bladder, through the catheter and out into a collection bag or other receptacle.
Olive Tip Catheter Sizes
There are various different sizes of olive tip catheters that may be used depending on the patient’s age and other factors. As with other types of catheter, olive tip catheters are measured using the French gauge system. Common sizes for this kind of catheter range from 5 Fr for the narrower models up to 16 Fr for the wider catheters.
Olive Tip Catheter Types
Olive tip catheters can be divided into two main types: intermittent and indwelling. Intermittent olive tip catheters are the most common variety and are designed to be used on a short-term basis, inserted and removed as needed according to the patient. Indwelling catheters, on the other hand, are aimed at long-term use and can remain inside the body for extended periods of time.
Olive Tip Catheter Uses
There are many potential cases in which olive tip catheters may be of use. They are favored over straight tip catheters in cases where a straight tip model would cause pain or distress to the patient for one reason or another, such as a blockage in the urethra. They can be used to help patients dealing with a wide variety of medical issues, including incontinence, urinary retention, and mobility problems.
