What Is a Hypodermic Needle?
Hypodermic needles are some of the most commonly-used medical tools in the world. Named using the Greek words "hypo", meaning under, and "derma", meaning skin, these tools consist of a thin, hollow tube with a sharpened tip.
Often used in conjunction with syringes, hypodermic needles are sharp enough to penetrate the layers of skin and useful for injecting substances into the body, such as drugs or fluids, as well as for drawing fluids out of the body, like blood.
Hypodermic needles have been in use for hundreds of years, but the earliest models have been vastly improved-upon over time, and today's hypodermic needles are extremely efficient and effective.
These types of needles are used on a daily basis by doctors, nurses, and other medical practitioners to help patients with a range of conditions. They're also important in the field of medical research and are very commonly chosen over other needle types due to their safety and efficiency.

How Does a Hypodermic Needle Work?
The way in which a hypodermic needle works is very simple. First, some sort of fluid will be drawn up through the needle, with the aid of the plunger, which can be pulled back with the fingers. The fluid can then be administered to a patient by pushing the tip of the needle through the skin in a designated area and pushing the plunger down to release the contents.
Hypodermic Needle Sizes
There are various different sizes of hypodermic needles, and it's important for the right size of product to be chosen to suit each patient and situation. In terms of length, these needles usually measure between 1/2 an inch and 2 inches. In terms of diameter, or gauge, they can measure anywhere from 20 G up to 30 G.
Hypodermic Needle Types
There are various types of hypodermic needles available. They all have the same key features, like the main needle itself, the barrel of the syringe, and the plunger, but they can vary in terms of various factors, like the size of the barrel, the shape of the needle tip, the design of the plunger, and so on. Needles may be thinner or wider in order to be used for different depths of injections and different areas of the body.
Hypodermic Needle Uses
The main use of hypodermic needles is for injections into the body, via the skin. As the name of these needles implies, they're designed to be able to break through the dermis (skin) and administer fluids and medications into a patient's body. This can be essential for delivering all sorts of medications, from cancer-treating drugs to doses of anesthesia.
