What Is an Introducer Sheath?
An introducer sheath, which can also be known solely as a sheath or as an introducer, is an IV line, which may be arterial or venous, that contains a port which allows the introduction (hence the name) of other items like balloon pumps, pacing wires, and intravascular ultrasound devices.
Introducer sheaths consist of a line of IV tubing, just like other IV lines, but they also have this special port with a one-way diaphragm to allow items to be inserted, while also stopping blood or other fluids from flowing back up the tube. When not in use, the port is capped with the aid of an obturator.
An introducer sheath is a very useful item of medical equipment to use in cases when extra items need to be guided along an IV line, like ultrasound scanners or intra-aortic balloon pumps. These items may be used for diagnostic or treatment purposes in a range of medical procedures.

How Does an Introducer Sheath Work?
The way in which introducer sheaths work is similar to other kinds of IV lines and tubes. The IV line will first need to be placed in position, connected to the appropriate IV bag and inserted into the patient's body, usually via an incision or cannula in the wrist or forearm. Once the sheath and line are in place, the cap of the introducer sheath can be opened to allow other items to be safely guided into the IV line.
Introducer Sheath Sizes
Introducer sheaths are available in a wide range of different sizes. Like IV lines and catheters, they are usually measured using the French gauge system, with average sizes ranging from 4 Fr up to 8 Fr. It’s important for the appropriate size to be selected so that the relevant items can be passed through the tube and covered by the sheath.

Most introducer sheaths are relatively similar in terms of their size, shape, and design. They can have some slight variations, however. An example of a specific type of introducer sheath is the hydrophilic introducer sheath, which has a special hydrophilic coating that is designed to reduce the risk of arterial spasms during medical procedures, easing the introduction and insertion of the sheath.
