What Is a Radial Artery Catheter?
A radial artery catheter is one designed to be used in radial artery access procedures. The radial artery is located in the wrist and doctors may want to enter this artery in order to carry out different cardiological procedures.
There are various advantages associated with radial artery catheter usage and radial artery catheterization in general. For example, it's relatively easy to apply pressure to the radial artery puncture site in order to stop the bleeding, as compared to other arteries, like the femoral artery.
Like other forms of catheter, a radial artery catheter consists of a long and hollow tube with two ends. One end of the tube is guided into the radial artery. The other can be connected to machines to monitor the functioning of the heart.
There are various reasons why radial artery catheters can be used and they help doctors obtain important information about a patient's heart and circulatory system.

How Does a Radial Artery Catheter Work?
Patients who are undergoing radial artery access procedures will first need to be tested to ensure that they are suitable for the procedure. A test known as the Allen test is usually carried out to determine this. If the patient is suitable, they will be given anesthetic to numb the area around the wrist before an incision is made. The artery will then be penetrated with a needle before the catheter is fed into it. The catheter can then be guided all the way to the patient's heart, following the course of the radial artery.
Radial Artery Catheter Sizes
The radial artery is relatively small when compared to other arteries, such as the femoral artery. Because of this, radial artery catheters tend to be quite small and narrow. They may have diameters of just 3 or 4 Fr
Radial Artery Catheter Types
Radial artery catheters are very specific in their design and function. Because of this, there is only one main type of radial artery catheter. Even though different providers may produce these catheters, they all follow the same general design.
Radial Artery Catheter Uses
Radial artery catheters are used to access, monitor and diagnose a patient's heart via the radial artery in the wrist. There may be various situations in which this is needed. For example, a patient suffering from coronary artery disease, heart failure, or other cardiovascular conditions may require radial access.
