What Is a Venous Catheter?

A venous catheter is a piece of medical equipment used to provide access to a patient’s veins and heart. They may be known by a wide range of other names, including vascular catheters, central lines, and central venous access catheters.

Like other catheters, venous catheters consist of a long, hollow tube which is flexible enough to bend and follow the natural curves of blood vessels within the body, traveling along major veins towards the heart. They may be divided into multiple lumens at one end, used for infusing different medicines and fluids into the body, and they often have an inflatable balloon to hold them in place.

These catheters can be used for a wide range of purposes. They’re very commonly used to deliver medicines and fluids into the body, like an IV line, and they can be useful in situations when patients require an extended period of treatment.

How Does a Venous Catheter Work?

First, an insertion site for the venous catheter will need to be identified. There are several major veins around the body that can be used with these catheters, in locations such as the chest, neck, arm and groin. Once a site has been chosen, it will be numbed with the aid of anesthetic and cleaned with a sterilizing solution like iodine. An incision is then made in the skin to make way for the catheter to pass through into the blood vessel. It can then be fed through the vessel towards the heart and held in position with an inflatable balloon.

Venous Catheter Sizes

As with other catheters, there are various different sizes of venous catheters that may be used in hospitals and clinics around the world. Since they need to pass through blood vessels, these catheters tend to be quite narrow, with diameters ranging from 3 Fr to 8 Fr, on average.

Venous Catheter Types

Venous catheters can be divided into a range of sub-types and categories, from thrombectomy catheters to standard central venous lines, PICC lines, tunneled catheters, and more. These catheters are all quite similar in terms of their function and purpose, but may differ slightly in design. Some may have different numbers of lumens, or channels, for example, and they may have different lengths and differently shaped tips, too.

Venous Catheter Uses

There are lots of different use cases for venous catheters. They can be used in any situation in which a doctor requires venous access in a patient. This may be relevant, for example, if a patient is suffering from chronic illnesses or heart conditions and needs to be given regular medicines directly into the bloodstream.

Teleflex, Cook Medical, Edwards Lifesciences, and Argon Medical Devices are just some of the top suppliers of venous catheters.
