What Is an Embolectomy Catheter?
Embolectomy catheters are special kinds of catheters that are used in embolectomy procedures. Like other kinds of catheters, they consist of a long, hollow tube that can be inserted into the human body. They have a balloon section at one end which can be inflated during the embolectomy procedure.
They may also be known as Fogarty embolectomy catheters, due to the fact that the first design was invented in the 1960s by Dr. Thomas J. Fogarty. Since that time, these catheters have been used in countless embolectomy procedures around the world and made the process of removing emboli in patients' blood vessels much easier and less risky than other methods, like surgery.
If a patient has emboli - small masses that travel through blood vessels and can cause blockages - in their system then an embolectomy catheter can help to rid them of this problem with minimal risk.

How Does an Embolectomy Catheter Work?
Like other kinds of catheter, an embolectomy catheter needs to be inserted into the body to function. It has a narrow tip at one end that makes insertion easier and is inserted directly into a blood vessel, guided carefully into position by trained specialists. Once the catheter is in place, the balloon section can be inflated in order to extract the emboli or clot from the blood vessel. This is part of the procedure known as embolectomy.
Embolectomy Catheter Sizes
Embolectomy catheters are available in a wide range of different sizes and are usually measured with the French gauge system, which shows us the diameter of any catheter tube. These catheters tend to be narrower than other kinds, with the most commonly used sizes ranging from 2 Fr to 7 Fr. Embolectomy catheters may be color-coded to make size identification more convenient.
Embolectomy Catheter Types
In terms of design, embolectomy catheters tend to all be more or less identical. They have the same key components, including the inflatable section near the tip. The only way in which they differ is in terms of size. Diameters can vary from catheter to catheter and the capacity of the balloon can also vary.
Embolectomy Catheter Uses
As the name implies, the main use of an embolectomy catheter is during an embolectomy procedure. This procedure is an emergency removal of emboli that are blocking blood from flowing through the body. It is usually used as a last resort or urgent procedure in cases where a blockage could lead to major organ damage or failure.
