What Is a 31 Gauge Needle?
There are many different sizes of needles, and they’re all measured and manufactured according to the gauge system. Gauge is a measurement that tells us how wide a needle is in terms of the diameter from one side of the needle to the other, and 31 gauge needles are some of the narrowest around.
31 gauge needles measure 0.29mm or 0.0116 inches across. This is one of the narrowest needle sizes available, which means that 31 gauge needles have very specific uses and are not as commonly-used as other sizes of needle, like 16 gauge or 18 gauge, for example.
However, despite their limited range of applications, 31 gauge needles are still important items in the medical world and are very important for treating pediatric patients, in particular. They’re available in various types, including safety needles, oral needles, hypodermic needles, and others.

When to Use a 31 Gauge Needle?
It’s important to use 31 gauge needles in specific cases, and due to the very narrow shape and design of these needles, they only have certain uses. For example, they’re mainly used for children, or pediatric patients. This is because children have smaller bodies and smaller veins, so smaller gauge needles are better-suited for them than larger and wider needles.
31G Needle Sizes
As the name implies, 31 gauge needles all have the same diameter, as they are all precisely manufactured according to the standard 31 gauge size. They can, however, vary in length, with some being just a quarter of an inch and others being twice as long, or longer. It’s also important to note that there are many other gauges of needles, from 16 G to 30 G.
31G Needle Types
There are various different kinds of 31 gauge needles. Disposable 31 gauge needles, for example, are so-called due to the fact that they are only designed for single use and usually need to be disposed of after a single injection. Insulin needles, meanwhile, are specially made for the administration of insulin injections in patients with diabetes.
31G Needle Uses
There are plenty of different uses of 31 gauge needles. Due to their very narrow design, they’re most commonly used for treating pediatric patients, as they’re less likely to cause pain or damage the bodies of younger and smaller people. They’re also used in adult patients in some cases, such as adults with very narrow or restricted veins, and they’re helpful for injecting medicines, vaccines, and more.
