24 Gauge Needles / 24g Needles
Most medical facilities should have a supply of 24 gauge needles on hand for daily use. The size of choice for both muscle and deep intravenous injections, the 24 g is also known as a pediatric needle because it is small enough for children’s injections.
How is a 24 Gauge Needle Used?
Pediatricians may opt to use 24 gauge needles for vaccinating children. The CDC recommends gauges 22, 23 and 24 for both pediatric and adult intramuscular injections. The specific gauge and needle length you choose depends upon the volume of the patient’s muscle mass, the amount of fat at the injection site and the volume of the liquid for injection. You may also use the 24g needle for spinal injections or catheterization.

What is a Gauge for Needles?
The gauge of a needle is the sum of its measurements, including wall thickness, its inner diameter and its outer diameter. Needle gauges are based upon the 17th-century Birmingham wire gauge chart. According to this system, larger needles have smaller gauge numbers and vice versa.
The 24 gauge needle has the following dimensions:
- Outer diameter: 0.02225 in. (variation 0.00025 in.) or 0.5652 mm (variation 0.0064)
- Inner diameter: 0.01225 in. (variation 0.00075 in.) or 0.311 mm (variation 0.019 mm)
- Wall thickness: 0.00500 in. (variation 0.00025 in.) or 0.1270 mm (variation 0.0064 mm)
- Common lengths: 1 to 3.5 in.
The ISO6009 color coding system for hypodermic needles enables you to determine the gauge of a needle at a glance. The Luer lock connector between needle and syringe is a different color for each gauge. Medium purple is the color code for 24g needles.
