According to Discover Magazine, the first therapeutic application of intravenous resuscitation was performed by Dr. Thomas Latta in May 1832. Dr. Latta injected six pints of intravenous solution consisting of sodium, chloride and bicarbonate to a patient who soon showed signs of recovery. While Dr. Latta's discovery was not immediately put into practice, the use of intravenous (IV) therapies has become a mainstay of modern medicine. The New England Journal of Medicine reported in 2018 that more than 40 million bags of saline solution are used each month. This represents a significant investment by healthcare facilities around the globe.

How IV Bags Work
As Professor Claire Wladis of the City University of New York explains, IV bags are used to administer fluids in larger quantities than would be possible by injections directly into the skin or muscle tissue. As the name suggests, intravenous or IV injections are directed into the vein. Healthline notes that proper regulation of the rate and quantity of IV fluids is necessary to prevent complications that could threaten the health of the patient. According to the Code of Federal Regulations Title 21 of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, IV set stopcocks, flow regulators, drip chambers and fluid delivery tubing can all be used to manage the rate of flow for IV bag applications.
Types of IV Bags
IV bags are available in unfilled and prefilled configurations and in a wide range of types:
- Empty IV bags offer the greatest versatility for healthcare providers. Empty IV bags can be filled by healthcare providers with a solution or fluid best suited to the needs of the patient.
- Prefilled IV bags offer superior convenience in the healthcare environment. Saline solution and Ringer's lactate are the most commonly available solutions in prefilled IV bags.
- Infusion bags are used to deliver a range of medications, nutrients and fluids to patients. Healthline notes that infusion therapy is often helpful for patients with cancer, immune deficiencies, congestive heart disease and chronic pain.
- Compounding IV bags are used in the process of creating customized medication delivery for patients. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists has established guidelines for mixing sterile products for use in compounding IV bags and for delivering the right combination of medications for a specific patient.
- Gravity IV bags depend on the natural force of gravity to ensure that fluids are delivered to patients. The rate of delivery is controlled by a regulator that prevents too much of the fluid from being infused at once.
- EVA IV bags are constructed using ethyl vinyl acetate, which is free of plastic compounds that could potentially leach into certain solutions. This makes EVA IV bags a more practical solution for some patients.
- IV bag holders are available in a wide range of configurations. Choosing the right hardware for your IV bags is essential to ensure the best mobility and medication delivery for patients.
- Ringer's lactate IV bags are designed to deliver high levels of sodium lactate to patients who need this important biological fuel. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, Ringer's lactate solution is often used to restore fluid volume in patients with severe burns, blood loss or sepsis.
Choosing the right IV bags for specific situations is essential to protect the health of patients. At Central Infusion Alliance, our experienced and knowledgeable staff members can help you locate the right IV solutions for your facility and for the needs of your patients.
