What Is a Catheter Tip?
A catheter tip is the narrow end part of a catheter tube which is inserted into the urethra and travels through it to reach the bladder. These very slim, narrow tubes can come in various forms, including whistle catheter tips and olive catheter tips, which have slightly different shapes and usage scenarios.
Catheter tips can also be divided into straight or coudé, which means bent or curved. The reason for these different tips is that people can have different sizes of urethrae, and certain shapes or sizes of catheter tips are better-suited for certain patients.
A tip is an essential part of a catheter. The catheter cannot be inserted without a tip and the cathing process cannot function without this key component. Tips need to be made and handled with great care due to their delicate design and the risk of internal injury if they are used or manufactured incorrectly.

How Does a Catheter Tip Work?
The catheter tip is attached to the end of the catheter tube. They can be attached to all sorts of catheters, from Foley catheters to closed system catheter kits. The tip is then inserted into the urethra and pushed into the body to reach the bladder. Urine can then flow through the tip into the catheter tube, leading to a catheter bag.
Catheter Tip Sizes
Catheter tips are available in a wide range of different sizes. The system of measurement usually used for catheter tips is the French gauge or Fr system. French gauge sizes range from 3 to 34 and have different diameters, ranging from 0.039 inches up to 0.445 inches. Catheter tips are commonly around 12 to 20 Fr, but may be bigger or smaller, depending on the circumstances.
Catheter Tip Types
There are two main types of catheter tips: straight and coudé. Straight tip catheters are completely straight, while coudé tips are slightly bent or curved at the end. Straight tips are the most common and work well in most situations, but coudé tips can be more comfortable or easier to insert in certain people, like those with enlarged prostates, blockages, or urethral strictures.
Catheter Tip Uses
The main function of a catheter tip is to facilitate the entry of the catheter tube into the urethra. It needs to be very small and thin in order to enter the body smoothly and with minimal pain or discomfort. Once the catheter tip has been inserted, it’s easier for the rest of the catheter tube to follow, and then urine can flow freely from the bladder through the catheter, via the tip.
