What Is a Braided Suture?
Braided sutures are a specific type of medical suture. They consist of several threads all braided together, hence the name. Since braided sutures consist of multiple threads, they're thicker than most other kinds of sutures, and the thickest medical sutures are usually braided variants.
The extra thickness of braided sutures means that they're significantly stronger and more durable than other types of sutures. This helps with durability and security. However, there are some downsides of braided sutures, as they can be a little trickier to work with, due to their thickness, and they may cause a higher risk of infection, as well.
Like other kinds of sutures, braided sutures are available in various types and sizes, including both absorbable braided sutures and non-absorbable braided sutures. They’re very useful for stitching up wounds and surgery sites after an operation, helping to speed up the healing process for patients in different circumstances.

How Does a Braided Suture Work?
Just like any other kind of suture, braided sutures work in a relatively simple way. First, the surgeon or other healthcare provider must choose the correct size and type of braided suture, depending on the situation at hand. The braided suture can then be connected to a surgical needle and then guided through the tissue, muscle, tendon or skin in order to stitch the site together.
Braided Suture Sizes
Braided sutures are available in a wide range of sizes, and they're usually measured with the USP (United States Pharmacopeia) system. Braided sutures tend to be among the thicker variants, with sizes like 3, 4, and 5 on the USP standard, which equates to around 0.6 to 0.8mm in diameter.
Braided Suture Types
There are multiple types of braided sutures, including silk braided sutures, polyester braided sutures, and polyglactic or vicryl braided sutures. Each one has its own specific pros, cons, and best-case usage scenarios. For example, vicryl braided sutures are great for repairing hand or facial wounds, but aren't the best option for cardiovascular procedures or repairing damaged blood vessels. It’s also possible to find both absorbable and non-absorbable braided sutures, where absorbable variants are capable of degrading on their own and non-absorbable sutures need to be removed manually.

There are many potential uses of braided sutures, and since they’re relatively thick, they’re a good choice for repairing deep wounds, cuts, or lacerations around different areas of the body, like the face, limbs, hands, and feet.
