What Is a Flush Syringe?
A flush syringe, which may also be known as an IV flush syringe or flushing syringe, is a special type of syringe that is used for keeping IV lines free of any air bubbles or obstructions. They’re used in hospitals and other healthcare centers on a daily basis all over the world.
Flush syringes look like many other kinds of syringes. They consist of a narrow central tube, with graduated markings along the side to show how much liquid is in the tube at any one time. A plunger is situated at one end of the syringe, which can be pushed and pulled to draw in or eject liquid, and the other end has a narrower point for connecting to catheters or IV lines.
Flush syringes also usually come prefilled with saline solution. Also known as sodium chloride solution, this is a mixture of water and salt. It can be easily and safely injected into the IV line to flush it and ensure that liquid is still able to flow through into the body.

How Does a Flush Syringe Work?
The way in which flush syringes are used is very simple. First, if it is not already filled, the syringe will need to be filled with saline solution or heparin, depending on the needs of the patient. It can then be flicked or tapped to get rid of any air bubbles, before being attached to a port of a catheter. Once in place, the plunger of the syringe can be pushed to release the liquid and flush the catheter. Once the flushing is done, the syringe can be removed and the catheter clamp resealed.
Flush Syringe Sizes
Flush syringes, just like other syringes, are available in a variety of different sizes, ranging from small flush syringes to much larger variants for intensive flushing. They can range from as small as 3ml in capacity up to 10ml. 5ml and 6ml are also common sizes.
Flush Syringe Types
Flush syringes can be divided into different categories or types. Firstly, we can divide them into prefilled or empty. Prefilled flush syringes arrive with saline solution or heparin already inside them, while empty syringes are empty and need to be filled before use. They can also be divided into saline and heparin flush syringes. Each one contains a different fluid.
Flush Syringe Uses
The main use of flush syringes is to flush catheters and IV lines. This cleans out the line and helps to get rid of any air bubbles or obstructions that could be blocking the flow of fluids along the tube. This is done regularly when patients are hooked up to IV lines, as it’s not uncommon for small blockages or bubbles to form in the line and interfere with the flow of fluids.
