What Is a Balloon Catheter?
A balloon catheter is a form of catheter. It is soft and flexible in nature, with an inflatable "balloon" section at one end. This inflatable section is used during the catheterization process in order to widen or enlarge an opening or passage in the body.
First, the deflated catheter is placed in position, and then the balloon section is inflated in order to open the space. There are various uses of balloon catheters, including for angioplasty, tuboplasty, and pyeloplasty operations.
Balloon catheters can therefore be used for entering Fallopian tubes, urethrae, and blood vessels. They are among the most versatile and useful forms of catheter, suitable for a wide range of operations and procedures.
Like other catheters, they can be found in different lengths and diameters, and different sizes of balloon catheter may be needed for patients of different sizes and ages.

How Does a Balloon Catheter Work?
The way in which a balloon catheter works is quite simple. The catheter has a section at one end which can be inflated or deflated manually. To begin insertion, the catheter is deflated and placed in position. Then, once it is in the right place, the balloon part is inflated. The inflation expands the tip of the catheter, gently pushing at the surroundings. This opens or widens gaps and passages, making certain procedures easier to perform.
Balloon Catheter Sizes
There are a range of different sizes of balloon catheters to choose from, and it's important for medical practitioners to select the most appropriate size for the patient and procedure being carried out. These catheters can be measured in different ways. The French gauge system tells us the diameter of the catheter tube, while the CC rating shows the potential volume of the balloon. Typical ranges are from 5 to 24 Fr and anywhere from 20 to 50cc.
Balloon Catheter Types
There are multiple types of balloon catheters. Over-the-wire or OTW balloon catheters come with a guiding wire running along the full length of the catheter to make insert and positioning easier. Fixed-wire or FW balloon catheters have a wire core built inside them. Meanwhile, rapid exchange or RX balloon catheters have a guide wire in just a small section (usually around 250mm). Different procedures may require different kinds of balloon catheters.
Balloon Catheter Uses
There are many different uses of balloon catheters. A common use is for angioplasty surgeries, in which the catheter is inserted into blood vessels like arteries and veins to widen them in case of blockages. They are also used in tuboplasty operations to restore the Fallopian tubes, along with pyeloplasty, which is used to treat renal problems. These catheters can also be used for cryoablation, balloon sinuplasty, drug delivery, stent delivery, atherectomy, and other operations.
