What Is a Male Catheter?
Male catheters are catheters designed for use in male patients. They have a lot in common with female catheters, but can vary in terms of size and design. Size is the main area in which male catheters stand out, as they are typically longer than female catheters, due to the longer urethra in male patients.
There are different types of male catheters, including intermittent catheters which are designed to be used on an intermittent, short-term basis, as well as long-term indwelling Foley catheters that are inserted into the body and left in place for a longer period of time, usually while a patient is bed-ridden or recovering from surgery.
Male catheters can also vary in terms of length, diameter, and design, but they all aim to serve the same key function of allowing a male patient to pass urine in situations when regular urination may be difficult, painful, or impossible.

How Does a Male Catheter Work?
It depends on the type of male catheter you’re using. Most male catheters are internal and need to be inserted into the body. They usually have to be lubricated at the tip and then pushed through the urethra until they connect with the bladder, allowing urine to flow freely out of the body and into a collection bag. External male catheters, however, can simply be placed around the end of the penis to collect urine as it leaves the urethra.
Male Catheter Sizes
One of the major ways in which male catheters differ from female catheters is in size. Male catheters usually need to be longer than female catheters as they have to travel further through the urethra to reach the bladder and allow urine to leave the body. They may be several inches longer than female catheters, with diameters ranging from as low as 3 or 4 Fr up to 24 Fr and beyond.
Male Catheter Types
There are various types of male catheters, including straight tip, coude catheters, intermittent catheters, Foley catheters, and condom catheters. Straight tip catheters are very commonly-used and so-called due to the straight shape of their tips. Coudé catheters have a curved tip and can be used for male patients who have blockages in the urethra. Intermittent catheters are designed for temporary, short-term use, while Foley catheters can be used for longer periods, and external or condom catheters do not need to be inserted in the body at all.
